Strawberries are very
popular berries grown especially in
countries caracterized by temperate or cold climate. Despite a short season for
this fruit the world’s strawberry harvest is estimated at over 800, 000 t and the world’s
largest producer are the USA.
What’s
interesting, the king of France Louis XIV (who lived in XVIII century) is the
one who gave start to the strawberry we know. He sent his spies to South
America for miitary purposes, where in today’s Chile one of them found
strawberries much larger than those known to Europeans. The man decided to take
few seedlings to the king as a gift and they were planted in the royal garden
in France. Infortunately the seedlings didn’t grow well so the king employed
some botanists to take care of it. They crossed the chilean variety with the
virginian, obtaining large and juicy fruts which are the strawberries we plant
nowadays.
What about their
nutritional value, strawberries are very healthy. They are low in calories and
contain calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and many vitamins
(especially vitamin C). They remove excess free radicals from the human body,
slown down the aging process of the organism and prevent the development of the
lifestyle disease.
However, the best
thing about strawberries is that they are delicious and easily accessible. In
june we can boy them everywhere, although none are as good as from our mothers’
gardens.
What more can I say, enjoy !
